Cairnryan to Belfast Ferry Weather

Home » Irish Sea » Cairnryan Belfast

Overview

The ferry route between Cairnryan and Belfast is one of the most important links between Scotland and Northern Ireland. Operated by Stena Line, it takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes and is one of the shortest yet busiest ferry connections across the Irish Sea.

Weather conditions on the Irish Sea can significantly impact ferry travel. While this crossing is relatively short, high winds and rough seas can still lead to delays or cancellations. Autumn and winter storms are the most common causes of disruption, and passengers prone to seasickness (you can use our calculator to estimate the risk) should take precautions during periods of rough weather.

Wave Forecast

Strong westerly and southwesterly winds influence waves in the Irish Sea. In normal conditions, wave heights range between 0.5 and 1.5 meters, but they can reach 3 to 5 meters during storms. The worst conditions usually occur between October and March, when low-pressure systems bring strong winds and rough seas.

Wind Forecast

Strong winds are frequent on the Irish Sea, particularly in winter. Wind speeds of 25-35 knots (46-65 km/h) are typical; during severe storms, gusts can exceed 50 knots (93 km/h). These conditions can create choppy waters and increase motion on board, affecting passenger comfort and the risk of seasickness.

The vessels  Stena Line uses on this route can withstand intense storms. Read more about this in our ferry cancellation policies.

Rain and Storm Forecast

Rain and storm conditions are frequent in this region, particularly between late autumn and early spring. Heavy rain can reduce visibility and occasionally lead to ferry delays. Storms associated with low-pressure systems may bring high winds and rough seas, increasing the likelihood of motion sickness.
