The English Channel connects the Atlantic Ocean with the North Sea. It is one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, with frequent ferry and cargo traffic.

Delays are more common in winter, when strong winds and rough seas are prevalent. Full cancellations are rare, but sailings may be postponed by 1 to 3 hours during storms.

December through February are typically the windiest months. Storms in the North Atlantic can push into the Channel, bringing strong gusts and high waves.

Most passengers experience smooth crossings, but rough winter weather can cause discomfort. Sitting midship, using seasickness tablets, or taking a shorter route, such as Dover–Calais, can help.

The average wave height is 1 to 2 meters. During winter storms, waves can reach 3 to 5 meters in height, although ferries are designed to navigate these conditions safely.

The Channel has strong tidal flows, often reaching 2 to 4 knots. In narrow sections, such as the Dover Strait, currents can be even stronger, affecting ferry schedules and navigation.
