Ferry to Bilbao Weather

The forecast for the ferry ride to Bilbao (or Santander) by Brittany Ferries. (Travel Updates Page)!

Wave Forecast

⚠️ When does Brittany Ferries cancel routes due to bad weather?

Brittany Ferries may cancel sailings when lousy weather conditions compromise the safety of their vessels and passengers. (Think at least of waves above 5 meters) Specific criteria for such cancellations are not publicly detailed, as the company’s operations team makes decisions based on real-time assessments.

Ticket Policies in the Event of Cancellations:

  • Brittany Ferries informs passengers via SMS or email if sailing is cancelled.
  • Passengers are typically offered the choice between re-routing on the next available sailing or receiving a full refund of the ticket price. (Check the terms)
  • While passengers are entitled to assistance during delays or cancellations, compensation for delays does not apply if the disruption is due to adverse weather conditions.
  • Flexi Tickets: Free amendments up to 4 hours before outward sailing. £20/€20 per amendment within 4 hours and after outward sailing

Bilbao Weather Forecast

  1. How bad does the Bay of Biscay get on the Portsmouth to Bilbao ferry? Heard mixed things about the waves out there. Dont want to get Seasick

    1. The Bay of Biscay is unpredictable, especially in autumn and winter when Atlantic storms can bring high waves and strong winds.

On the Portsmouth to Bilbao route, the ferry crosses this open stretch of water, which can be rough at times. However, modern ferries like those used by Brittany Ferries are equipped with stabilizers to reduce motion. If you’re prone to seasickness, book a cabin midship (where movement is less noticeable), and consider taking motion sickness medication in advance.

Summer crossings tend to be calmer, but rough seas are always a possibility in the Bay of Biscay.”
