The Greek islands; will the ferries cancel or not?
The Aegean Sea lies between mainland Greece and Turkey, where calm days can quickly turn rough seas. Ferries on routes such as Piraeus to Mykonos or Piraeus to Rhodes are often affected by strong winds, which can lead to delays (normal) or cancellations (rare).
Seajets cancels earlier when winds rise: Sailings are often suspended once speeds reach force 7 to 8 on the Beaufort scale, and especially if gusts approach force 9. Cancellations happen more frequently with Seajets because many of their vessels are high-speed catamarans, which are more sensitive to rough seas than the larger conventional ferries.
With our wave trackers and wind charts, you can monitor real-time conditions and prepare for possible disruptions.

Waves Aegean Sea
- When are waves the highest? In the Aegean Sea, the strongest winds usually occur in summer, especially in July and August when the Meltemi blows from the north. This often leads to rougher seas in the central and southern islands.
- At what wave height do cancellations occur? Ferry operators may cancel sailings when wave heights reach 4 to 5 meters+. Smaller vessels and high-speed ferries are often affected earlier, while larger ships can sail in rougher conditions.
Cancellations due to wind
In summer, especially July and August, ferries are sometimes cancelled when the Meltemi reaches 8+ Beaufort (around 50–60 km/h). Most operators in Greece consider cancellations from 9 Beaufort and higher, but smaller high-speed ferries may stop already from 7 Beaufort.
However, always keep in mind that actual cancellation decisions depend on the operator and port authorities.
Storm
When are waves the highest in the Aegean Sea? The strongest winds and highest waves usually occur in July and August, when the Meltemi blows from the north. This blowing most affects the central and southern islands.
At what wave height are ferries usually cancelled? Cancellations often start around 4 to 5 meters of waves. Smaller or high-speed ferries can be affected earlier, sometimes from 2 to 3 meters, while larger vessels can sail in rougher seas.
At what wind strength do ferries in Greece cancel? High-speed ferries may stop at 7 Beaufort, while conventional ferries are usually cancelled at 8+ Beaufort, depending on the route. Port authorities and operators make the final decision. It’s different per route and vessel.
Who decides if a ferry is cancelled? The ferry operator decides on cancellations in coordination with the Greek port authorities. Even if conditions seem fine locally, official safety rules apply.
Are there seasonal differences in ferry cancellations? Yes. In summer, the Meltemi winds from the north can cause frequent cancellations, especially in July and August. In winter, intense storms and rough seas are the main reasons for disruptions. Recent storms that had huge impact were Zorbas, Ballos, and Daniel in 2023.

Wondering about the chances of going as planned due to winds, seajets ferry from Andros to Tinos on September 4,2025 at 15:30? If cancelled, will bigger ships leave as planned?
@Niv
The Superrunner Jet is active on this route: https://www.vesselfinder.com/nl/?imo=9141883 A large ship which can take on enormous wind, the expectation for that day is 10 to 12 m/s which is ‘strong wind’ the ship can easily take on that weather! 🌊 Enjoy the ride! 🌊

Will Blue Star sailings from Naxos to Paris be cancelled today? Seajets already cancelled all ferries. Thanks!
Same as I replied to Chris:
Sea Jets uses ´faster´ vessels meaning they will cancel more quickly compared to the vessels from Blue Star Ferries ( who tend to be slower more relaxed AND can take bad weather more easily!)
Hi there. My seat jets booking has been cancelled for today due to adverse weather conditions. It looks like I can still book onto the blue star ferries later on this evening, Will this also be cancelled? Do you know if ferries are likely to run tomorrow?
Sea Jets uses ´faster´ vessels meaning they will cancel more quickly compared to the vessels from Blue Star Ferries ( who tend to be slower more relexad AND can take bad weather more easily!)
So yes, I would give it a try at the port or buy a flexible ticket in advance. However, this is not the case on all routes, and you didn’t give any route information.
Sorry, my route is from Mykonos to Santorini I’m rebooked for September 20th on Seajets at 1230pm
